Body and Pubic Lice

Pubic lice ('crabs')are parasitic insects that feed on human blood. They are short and crab-like and look different from head and body lice. Pubic lice typically attach to hair in the pubic area where they feed and cause a pubic itch. Adult pubic lice are 1.1–1.8 mm in length (size of a pencil tip).

Body lice are parasitic insects that feed on human blood. It can cause itching all over the body and spread disease. They live and lay eggs on clothing and bedding used by infested people. Adult body lice are small, only 2.3 – 3.6 mm in length (about the size of a sesame seed).

Pubic and body lice can be controlled with Skabi-Rid lotion containing 5% permethrin. Shaving and other hair removal methods (waxing, sugaring) will not get rid of pubic lice on its own.

Directions

  1. Wash the infested area and towel dry.
  2. Apply Skabi-Rid lotion to all infested areas including pubic hair. Leave on overnight and wash off the following morning with Skabi-Rid Soap™ for best results. Normal soap can also be used.
  3. Following treatment, most nits (eggs) will still be attached to hair shafts. Remove nits with fingernails or fine-toothed comb.
  4. Put on clean underwear and clothing after treatment.
  5. Machine-wash items that the infested person used during the 2 – 3 days before treatment to kill any lice or nits remaining on clothing, towels, or bedding. Use hot water (at least 130°F) and the hot dryer cycle.
  6. Clothing can be soaked in 5 liters of water mixed with one 100ml bottle of Skabi-Rid lotion. This will offer residual protection for two weeks on fabric.
  7. Dry clean clothing and items that are not washable or seal them in a plastic bag and store for two weeks.
  8. Inform all sex partners from the past month that they are at risk for infestation and need treatment.
  9. Avoid sexual contact with partners until both they (and their partners) have received  treatment and ruled out infestation.
